            The Department of Environmental Sciences started functioning in the University of Calicut, subsequent to a resolution of the Syndicate held on 26.08.2008. The Post Graduate programme (M.Sc.) in Environmental Sciences started on 23rd September 2015. Since then, the department has been offering quality education through serious academic sessions and objective oriented field level activities. The department is offering a wide range of community services through periodic awareness camps and action-oriented programmes. The department offers analytical and advocacy services to farmers and local populace in the area of soil and water quality analyses for meeting their requirements.

          The M.Sc. Environmental Science programme is an interdisciplinary one with an intake of 20 students. Students from various science disciplines are admitted to this programme after an entrance examination / interview.

          The Department has academic autonomy and has been revising the syllabus of the PG programme every four years. The Department follows the CCSS system (Choice-based Credit-based Semester System), which offers flexibility in the structuring and assessment of courses. Currently, the Department has four divisions:

  •  Environmental toxicology division
  •  Microbiology division
  •  Pollution control and waste management division
  •  Geoinformatics division
