Increase in human population and subsequent pressure on natural resources has adversely affected the quantity of natural resources and thereby the quality of ecosystem services. To bring up generations competent to tackle the issues of the environment from a regional, national and international perspective, more human resource development centres in Environmental Sciences need to come up.
The Department of Environmental Sciences started functioning in the University of Calicut in 2008, subsequent to a resolution of the Syndicate of the University held on 26.08.2008. The Post Graduate programme (M.Sc.) in Environmental Sciences under the School of Earth Sciences has started in 2015. This interdisciplinary programme is under Choice based Credit Semester System of the University. Intake to this four-semester programme is 20. The department also offers separate quota for Indian and foreign nationals. Students with a graduation in any science subject can apply for admission to the M.Sc. programme in Environmental Science. Admission is through an entrance exam, which will be held as per the academic calendar of the University.
